Energy supply and consumption: Time series data on energy consumption in domestic air transport have become revised

revision release | time of change:

Description of the correction

The data on air transport included in energy consumption in domestic transport have been updated throughout the time series. The time series covers the years 1970 to 2025. The change is updated in the database tables included in the statistics on energy supply and consumption as follows:

  • Database table 12sz – Energy consumption in transport: The change was made on 9 June 2026. The table includes data for the years 1990 to 2025.
  • Database table 12vk – Final energy consumption by sector: The change will be made on 16 December 2026. The table includes data for the years 1990 to 2025.
  • Table 5 containing the time series of air transport and domestic transport in the energy table service will be updated in early 2027. Once updated, the energy table service will cover the years 1970 to 2025.

As a result of the change, energy consumption in domestic air transport is around one half lower than in the previously published time series. The impact of the updating of data on domestic air transport on the energy consumption of all domestic transport is around one per cent on the annual level. The change does not affect Finland's total energy consumption because the items of aviation gasoline and jet fuel removed from air transport are taken into account as consumed in other sectors.

The change was made so that the data of the domestic releases of the statistics correspond to the methodological guidelines of Eurostat's energy statistics. As a result of the revision, the content of domestic air transport in the statistics on energy supply and consumption corresponds to the data on domestic air transport in the greenhouse gas inventory.

The previously published data on domestic air transport included the entire amount of jet fuel and aviation gasoline sold in Finland regardless of the use of the fuel. The revised data on domestic air transport cover the consumption of jet fuel and aviation gasoline in actual passenger and freight transport.

The items of aviation gasoline and jet fuel removed from air transport include helicopters and recreation, training and defence force flights, as well as statistical discrepancy. These data cannot be separated in more detail from the results.
