The products of an industry must enable the production, transmission or display of information by electronic means. The products of the manufacturing industry must:
a) be intended for information processing and communication, including transmission and display
b) use electronic processes to detect, measure and/or record physical phenomena or control a physical process.

Components relating to such products are included in the definition.

For services:
a) the products must be designed to enable information processing and communication by electronic means,
b) the service must be more than provision of goods.

ICT sector = information and communications technologies sector.

The Standard Industrial Classification used in Finland is based on the NACE Rev. 1 classification which is used in Europe:
