Sub-regional unit

Sub-regional units consist of aggregates of two or more municipalities. The Ministry of the Interior has defined sub-regional units as the basic regions in the determination of regional subsidies in the regional policy. The criteria used in determining the sub-regional units are those of intermunicipal co-operation and commuting. The division into sub-regional units was introduced in 1994 as the basic division of regional development legislation (Act on Regional Development 1993/1135). The Ministry of the Interior confirms the division into sub-regional units but the sub-regional units can self determine their names.
