Tailored datasets are extracted specifically for each project for the research project to use.

The available datasets concern the population, employment, household-dwelling units, education, justice and business statistics. Tailored datasets can also be compiled based on ready-made research datasets.

Cause of death datasets

Statistics Finland produces annual statistics on deaths, causes of death and circumstances of death and maintains an archive of death certificates from which data in death certificates or copies of death certificates can be released for purposes defined in legislation. The cause of death dataset is based on the death certificate data. The data are supplemented with and verified against data on deaths in the population information system of the Digital and Population Data Services Agency.

Cause of death data can be released in table format or as copies of death certificates.

The processing of user licences for cause of death data and the dataset delivery are carried out in Statistics Finland's Research Services or Findata. Findata processes the licence applications for cause of death data that concern combining cause of death data with data from several controllers mentioned in the Act on the Secondary Use of Health and Social Data. Apply for a licence to use such data from Findata. If such combining is not done, apply for a user licence from Statistics Finland's Research Services.

Where can tailored datasets be used?

Tailored datasets are usually used in the FIONA remote access system.

For a valid reason, data with identification data on age, sex, education, occupation and socio-economic group may be released to the applicant's organisation. Releasing entails that

the applicant has the right to collect the data in question in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (this must be explained in the application).
the release of data in identifiable form is necessary for the research.

Acquisition of datasets

If you want to order a tailored research dataset, please contact Statistics Finland's Research Services. We negotiate with you about forming the dataset.

The compiling and processing of research datasets are priced based on the requirements and extent of work on an hourly basis (EUR 115 per hour + VAT). If the data are extracted from a ready-made dataset, the price is at least the same as the price of the ready-made dataset. You can request an estimate of the price of a dataset to be tailored and other assignments at tutkijapalvelut@stat.fi.

A user licence must be applied for the dataset. User licences, datasets and remote access use are subject to a charge. Read the instructions and price list carefully before applying for a user licence.
